Barcelona Churches, Barcelona Cathedrals and Barcelona Religious Buildings (Barcelona, Spain)
There are a large number of churches, cathedrals and religious buildings to be found in this historic city of Barcelona. Below are listed a selection of Barcelona churches and religious buildings which are well worth a visit.
Barcelona Churches: Catedral de Barcelona (Barcelona Cathedral) - Pla Seu, 3, 08002, Barcelona, Spain
Tel: +34 (0)93 315 1554
Barcelona Cathedral is the city's main place of worship and was constructed between 1298 and 1460. The main façade was added in 1870 and actually based upon a 1408 design. It is richly decorated, with numerous gargoyles and intricate stone carvings, making it quite unique in Barcelona.
The interior of Barcelona Cathedral is vast and is full of original features, being one of the few Barcelona churches not to be damaged in civil wars. With chapels, stunning Gothic architecture and many interesting tombs, you are also able to visit the roof of Barcelona Cathedral and a lift is available.
Barcelona Churches: Catedral de Girona (Girona Cathedral) - Placa de la Catedral, Girona, Spain
Situated to the north of Barcelona, Girona Cathedral is a wonderful church with many interesting features, including a fine, baroque façade. Much of the building has been altered over the centuries and there is also a museum with many historic exhibits.
Barcelona Churches: La Sagrada Familia - Carrer de Mallorca, Barcelona, Spain
One of Barcelona's main tourist attractions, La Sagrada Familia is quite awe inspiring and towers high into the sky. This medieval cathedral, designed by Antoni Gaudi, was never quite finished and the topmost tower should actually be even taller. Highlights include a crypt, museum and many splendid sculptures. Guided tours are also available:
Church open: April to August - 09:00 to 08:00, March and September to October - 09:00 to 19:00, November to February - 09:00 to 18:00
Church admission: charge
Barcelona Churches: Catedral de Tarragona (Tarragona Cathedral) - Ple de la Seu, Tarragona, Spain
Built between 1171 and 1331, Tarragona Cathedral is situated on the site of the Roman city's temple and combines both Gothic and Romanesque features. Highlights include a beautiful cloister and some particularly detailed woodcarvings. The interior of the cathedral in over 100 metres / 328 feet in length.
Barcelona Churches: Eglésia de Santa Maria del Mar - Passeig del Born, Barcelona, Spain
The Santa Maria church in Barcelona is without doubt one of the city's finest Catalan Gothic churches. Built over 500 years ago, the interior may not overly decorated, but this church is well proportioned and imposing. Musical concerts are staged in the church from time to time and these can be quite enchanting.
